The screeching sirens, which often start in the middle of the night, beat the dreaded egg timer which appears on computer screens when information is loading.

Computers in general came third in the poll of 5,000 people while speed cameras were fourth.

Unhelpful and illogical automated phone systems which leave Britons confused and send them round in circles, came fifth.

A spokesman for mobile phone recycling site www.PhonePiggyBank.com said: ”Car alarms can be the bane of many people’s lives – waking them up, or stopping them from nodding off at night.

”But everyone dreads seeing the egg timer pop onto their PC screen, it normally means you’re in for a long wait.

”And computers crashing, the dreaded Windows ‘bong’ sound and temperamental printers proves how much of a blight PCs are on our lives.

”Novelty door bells are far too cheesy and being woken up by your alarm clock is never fun.

”No matter how much they irritate us, they are all designed to make our lives easier in some way, however frustrating they are.”

Other technology which leave people fuming includes skipping CDs (No7), printers (No10), predictive text messaging (No12) and sat navs (No16).

Being woken by house alarms, slow interactive television services and the beeping of in-car parking sensors completed the top 20 list.

The research also found we get annoyed by technology at least four times a day, with the typical angry outburst and moan lasting six minutes.

And 68 per cent of those polled reckon blokes are riled much more easily than women.

But two thirds hate the fact they couldn’t live without their infuriating technology.
